![]() Anglo-American inhabitation in the area grew substantially following 1870 when a 105-ton steamer named The Vaquero, captained by Captain Samuel S. The State of California sold acre-plots of land for $1 a piece in the Newport area. Present-day Newport Beach exists upon the unceded homelands of the Tongva people, and they have a historical and continued presence as the traditional caretakers of the land. Throughout the 1800s, Europeans colonized the land and forcibly removed and assimilated the Tongva. ![]() The Tongva villages of Genga and Moyongna were located in Newport Beach. The Lower Bay of Newport was formed much later by sand brought along by ocean currents, which constructed the offshore beach now recognized as the Balboa Peninsula of Newport Beach.įor thousands of years, the Tongva people lived on the land in an extensive, thriving community. The fried rice was flavorless and bland (how is it even possible to make fried rice, which is normally so flavorful, bland? This place managed to achieve it!).The Upper Bay of Newport is a canyon carved by a stream in the Pleistocene period. Not a single pleasing bite of nice chicken like I’ve had at countless other restaurants in my life. Just skin and grissle and jerky-like texture on what was the worst pile of slop. Well, given these two, I’m not surprised at all! When I addressed the problems we had with the hostile server, the manager displayed extraordinary levels of both INCOMPETENCY and INDIFFERENCE to the concerns I brought to her attention (at one point, in describing what the man did, she even chuckled!) Now to the food: I had Orange Chicken, and it was the absolute worst cuts of meat, if you can even call the pieces legitimate meat, I’ve ever seen. I think that couple runs this place, and some comments I’ve read indicate that the restaurant is under new ownership and has gone downhill as a result. I get that, but the problems at this place run deep because while I am not certain, I do not believe this older man was just an employee I think he’s possibly the husband of the “manager” (a term that must be put in quotes because everything she did was so NOT managerial) or even a part owner (which is horrifying if it’s the case). So at this point a reader might be saying “so what, you just had a bad experience with a server it happens everywhere”. He seemed to be very proud of not needing to write anything down when he took the order, but hardly impressive when there were so many errors in his unconventional method. He’s extremely impatient and shows his aggravation visibly when asked even the most benign of questions about items on the menu. The older man literally slams food down on the table and slides bowls/plates towards you with grunts and some sort of grumbling under his breath-like he’s dealing with his worst enemies. restaurant and I am not exaggerating when I say I have never experienced more HORRIBLE SERVICE (and MEDIOCRE FOOD QUALITY) in my entire life!! It’s one thing to have generally bad or inattentive service, but totally another thing to have downright hostility directed at customers for no reason at all-within the first few seconds of our visit and it only increased with every minute. HOWEVER….while on vacation we decided to go to the actual. While we frequently ordered from this place when we lived in the area a decade ago and never went to the restaurant itself, I would have said the food WAS generally pretty good back then.
